Unnecessary Necessity
€30.00 EUR
Inspired by Luzūmiyyāt, a collection of cynical poetry by al-Ma’arri
(December 973 – May 1057) that explores themes of doubt, uncertainty,
and the afterlife with complex and often unnecessary rhyme,
Unnecessary Necessities is a book of 34 images divided into five thematic categories, printed using risograph techniques. The book
revisits the process of constructing an image, both philosophically
and practically, by exploring the layering of elements. It reimagines
these images through a printing method originally designed for
high-volume photocopying, while also paying homage to lithography—
an invention from 1796 that served as a precursor to another
mass production tool, offset printing.
Collaboration between photographer Xenia Nikolskaya , designer Engy Aly and writer Muhammad Addakhakhny.
